About Excel Macro Guy

The short version

I love Excel. My wife is an accountant working toward her CPA. During busy season, I'd watch her navigate the same repetitive workflows that every tax professional deals with — updating period-end dates across dozens of tabs, tying out trial balances, hunting through sprawling workbooks. The kind of work that eats hours and adds no value.

So I started writing macros to take those tasks off her plate. Then for her colleagues. Then it became clear that the same problems exist in every tax practice — and the people dealing with them shouldn't need someone technical at home to help.

Every macro on this site has been tested on real workpapers by a real accountant who catches every edge case before I publish. I write the code; she runs it against actual client data. What you get is the working version.

What this site is (and isn't)

This site is:
  • A library of copy-paste-ready macros for tax workpapers
  • Written for tax professionals who don't think of themselves as "macro people"
  • Focused on real problems — tie-outs, depreciation, multi-state
  • Tested by an actual accountant on real client data before anything ships
This site is not:
  • A "learn VBA programming" course — there are better resources for that
  • Generic Excel tips — every macro solves a specific tax workflow problem
  • A replacement for professional tax software — these macros enhance your workpapers, not your returns

Got a macro idea?

If there's a repetitive task in your tax workflow that you wish you could automate, I want to hear about it. The best macros on this site came from reader suggestions — real problems from real practitioners.

Yes, "Excel Macro Guy" is a bit tongue-in-cheek. No, you don't have to be a guy to use these macros. The macros don't check.
